Carney "Every 15 Minutes" program 2015

This past September we hosted the “Every 15 Minutes” program at Carney Nadeau school.  This program is offers real-life experience without the real-life risks. This emotionally charged program, entitled “Every15 Minutes” is an event designed to dramatically instill teenagers with the potentially dangerous consequences of drinking alcohol. This powerful program will challenge students to think about drinking, personal safety, and the responsibility of making mature decisions when lives are involved.

During the first day events the “Grim Reaper” calls students who have been pre-selected from a cross-section of the junior and senior student body out of class. One student is removed from class every 15 minutes. At that time, the student will be escorted to the “command post” to be made up as the “living dead”. A few minutes later, the student will return to class complete with white face make-up and a black Every 15 Minutes t-shirt. From that point on the student(s) representing the living dead will not speak or interact with any other students, including those involved in the program, for the remainder of the school day.

After lunch, a simulated traffic collision will be viewable on the school grounds. Rescue workers will treat injured student participants. These students will experience firsthand, the sensations of being involved in a tragic, alcohol-related collision.  Rescue workers and officers will handle fatalities on the scene, while the injured students will be extricated by the jaws-of-life manned by fire-fighters and Paramedics. Police Officers will investigate, arrest, and book the student “drunk driver”.  Student participants will continue their experience by an actual trip the hospital emergency room, funeral home and/or police department jail and court house for the purpose of being booked for “drunk driving”.

During the evening our HYC staff and volunteers take the student participates to a local hotel for an overnight retreat so we can debrief the day and do other activities relating to this issue.  The next day an assembly is held to wrap up the program and we have a guest speaker who has a real life experience with drunk driving.

Thank you to the sponsors and volunteers!
